The Importance of Remembering
Remembering plays a vital role in shaping who we are, both as individuals and as communities. Memory is central to our sense of identity – connecting us to our past, helping us make sense of our present, and guiding us into the future. For Christians, remembering carries even deeper significance as it connects us to God’s faithfulness and the larger story of salvation.
On a personal level, memories define our relationships and give us perspective on life’s journey. They help us navigate challenges by recalling the strength we’ve found before. In relationships, shared memories create bonds that endure even through loss.
In the Bible, the call to remember is foundational. The Israelites were commanded to remember God’s deliverance, and in the New Testament, Jesus tells his disciples to “do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). This act of remembering during the Eucharist is central to the Christian faith—it brings Christ’s sacrifice into our present lives and reaffirms the hope of salvation.
For Christians, remembering also roots us in God’s ongoing faithfulness. By reflecting on His past works, we find assurance in uncertain times. Memory, for believers, isn’t just looking back – it’s connecting with God’s promise of eternal life. In remembering our loved ones, we hold onto the hope of resurrection and reunion in God’s kingdom.
Ultimately, remembering allows us to honour the past, live faithfully in the present, and look forward to the future that God has promised. It is an essential part of both human identity and Christian faith.
Lest we forget.
