41 responses were received for the hymn popularity survey, reflecting 44 people’s choices. That is only half the normal Sunday morning congregation. The results from these have now been collated and they show just what a diversity of taste we have to cater for in hymns. Altogether one hundred and four different hymns were mentioned. No wonder it is so difficult to please everyone in choosing hymns!
The full results are posted on various notice boards around the church but these were the top hymns chosen with number of votes they received:
Be still for the presence of the Lord – 11 Votes Make me a channel of your peace – 9 Lord for the years – 7 Dear Lord and father of mankind – 7 Father I place into your hands – 6 O Lord my God (How great thou art) – 5 Lord the light of your love is shining – 5 I the Lord of sea and sky – 5 To God be the glory – 4 Lord Jesus Christ – 4 Beauty for brokenness – 4 And can it be – 4 A new commandment – 4
You can see that there is very little consensus and that even the most popular was chosen by only 25% of the respondents. If we were to put all our choices into one service we could be there for seven hours and probably quite exhausted by the end. Even if they were all chosen for the services for the next few weeks you would have to come to every service for 12 weeks to guarantee hearing your favourite.
