Lent: A Positive Pause in a Pressured World
Our world feels strained. Locally, people are tired, anxious, and stretched by rising costs and constant comparison. Nationally, debate is often polarised, and trust feels fragile. Globally, war, climate anxiety, and inequality leave many feeling overwhelmed or powerless.
Lent offers a different way of seeing. Rather than ignoring these realities, it invites us to slow down and reflect on the values that genuinely help people and communities flourish.
At the heart of the Christian faith is a counter-cultural conviction: that a person’s worth is not something to be earned, improved, or curated; it is given. We are valued not for how we look, what we achieve, or how we present ourselves, but because we are loved as we are. In a culture that encourages constant self-editing and external approval, this is quietly radical.
Lent nurtures self-love rooted in truth, not performance. When people know they are accepted, they are less easily manipulated by fear, trends, or pressure to change themselves artificially. This freedom helps us live with greater confidence, compassion, and integrity.
The values Lent highlights, restraint, generosity, humility, forgiveness, and care for others are not about denying life, but deepening it. They help us reach our full potential not by competing, but by connecting; not by dominating, but by working together for peace.
Lent is not a gloomy season. It is a creative, hopeful pause,a time to choose a values system that is positive, loving, and compassionate, and to rediscover a way of living that truly sustains us.
Blessing
Rev Silke
