April 2016 Report

At the time of writing this report the numbers are good for our Breakfast in Church on 13th March, and hopefully by the time you read this it will have gone well.  Many thanks to Robin Oakley for frying all the eggs.

The date originally planned for the evening cruise on the Kentish Lady was not available so this has now been booked for Saturday, 9th July, leaving Maidstone at 7.00pm.  This was a very popular outing two years ago.  The cost, including a buffet, will be £20 per person.  If you would like to join us for this, please put your name on the list at the back of Church, or ring Val Wallis on 891390.

This is my last magazine report as, after 13 very happy years as either Chair or Secretary of this committee, I have decided to stand down.  I have thoroughly enjoyed being on this committee, it has been hard work, but so rewarding. We have had wonderful support from friends and have made new special friendships along the way. I hope the new committee will have as much support as I have had in the past and I look forward to attending future events in a more relaxing role!

Alaine Summers, Secretary

March 2016 Report

Our annual Parish Sunday Lunch on Sunday, 31st January 2016, in the McCabe Day Centre was a great success – it certainly sounded as if everyone was enjoying themselves!! The roast beef was superb, supplied by our local butcher W.J. Crouch. The committee would like to thank all who helped in so many ways, peeling potatoes, serving, clearing up, washing glasses, providing raffle prizes, etc., but special thanks to Paul Brooker, who helped me all morning (particularly washing up and supplying me with coffee!), Rob Whittlesea for carving all those joints of beef, Maureen Whittlesea for doing the raffle, and Alec Jessup and John Stacey for helping Tug as wine waiters (didn’t they look good in their bow ties!).

Breakfast in Church will be served between the 8.00am and 10.00am services on Sunday, 13th March. A list is in Church for names of those who would like to attend to help us with catering, or ring me on 891867.

Alaine Summers, Secretary

February 2016 Report

We had a really good time at the Carols by Candlelight in the Parish Room on Saturday, 12th December. We would like to thank Daniel Brady for playing the merry organ to accompany our carol singing, and Richard Green for being our MC for the evening. We presented Richard with a bottle of champagne to celebrate his and Jo’s move to a new home and to thank him for being an MC at all our 10 previous Carols by Candlelight evenings. We will certainly miss him. We would also like to thank Rob and Maureen Whittlesea and Robin and Beryl Oakley for helping the committee prepare the hall and helping during the evening, and all who helped clear up afterwards.

Our thanks go to Val for organising mulled wine and mince pies following the service of Nine Lessons and Carols on 20th December. Because this was so popular Val and Norman offered to do a Donations for Dining event and serve mulled wine, mince pies and gingerbread biscuits following the High Mass service for Epiphany on 6th January. Thank you Val and Norman for your generosity, it was a lovely idea and raised £86 for our Church.

Our annual Parish Sunday Lunch on Sunday, 31st January 2016, in the McCabe Day Centre, will have taken place by the time you read this – hopefully everyone will have enjoyed themselves.

Breakfast in Church will be served between the 8.00am and 10.00am services on Sunday, 13th March. A list will be in Church soon for names of those attending, to help us with catering, or ring me on 891867.

November 2015 Report

Our Harvest Supper on Saturday, 10th October, was very successful. 42 people attended and enjoyed a hot supper. We had hoped to have some entertainment but as this did not happen we had a short fun Harvest quiz, it’s always amazing to see who knows what!! We would like to thank all those who provided food so generously, plus a very successful raffle, enabling us to send over £300 to our Harvest charity, Maidstone Care.

Breakfast in Church will be served on Sunday, 1st November, the list is in Church so please put your name on this if you would like to come along, or ring me on 891867.

We will be working with the Carnival & Fete committee at the Invicta Jazz Orchestra concert on 5th December. Last time the orchestra performed in our Church it was a brilliant evening, so don’t miss it!!

Our popular Carols by Candlelight in the Parish Room is on 12th December, the list will be in Church in mid November.

A date for your diaries is our annual Parish Sunday lunch in the McCabe Centre, which will be on Sunday, 31st January 2016, further details in next month’s magazine.

September 2015 Report

Breakfast in Church on 5th July was successful, although numbers were slightly down due to a variety of reasons. I must apologise that I under-catered and we ran out of cooked food at the end – most unusual – I certainly won’t do that again!

On Sunday, 13th September, we are joining in the Great British Sunday Lunch and organizing an event in support of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund – see the advert elsewhere in the magazine. During this 75th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain you will be helping WWII RAF veterans who did so much to save us from invasion – come along and raise a glass to what the RAF has done for our country and help us raise money to help RAF people, retired and serving, who are in great difficulty.

Our event will be held in the Parish Room on 13th September, 12.30 for 1.00pm, and we will be serving a choice of hot food plus a dessert, and tea or coffee. Tickets are £10 each, available from Chasing Rainbows, or ring me on 891867 or Tug on 892702 for further details. Soft drinks will be provided but please bring your own alcoholic drinks. There will also be a raffle and a few other fundraising games (optional!!). We do hope you will support this wonderful cause.

Harvest Supper will be on Saturday, 10th October, in the Parish Room, at 7.30pm. This year we will be serving a choice of hot main course, plus dessert, and tea or coffee. Tickets are £6 each and all profit made will go to our Harvest charity. Bring your own alcoholic drinks, soft drinks will be available. If you would like to join us please put your name on the list in Church, or ring me on 891867.

Breakfast in Church will be served on Sunday, 1st November, and Carols by Candlelight in the Parish Room on 12th December.

Alaine Summers, Secretary

June 2015 Report

We served drinks and nibbles in church to say a fond farewell to our curate, Mark Ham, on 12th April, and wish him well as he continues his training in Sittingbourne.

Our coach trip to Saint Valery-sur-Somme in France on Saturday, 9th May, was a great success, and I would like to thank Peter Ashby for suggesting the venue and arranging the steam train tickets. 48 people went on the coach, over 30 of them went on the steam train around the bay and the others explored the town and found restaurants to pass the time. We walked along the long promenade and found a restaurant right at the end overlooking the Bay, which was absolutely brilliant. We were blessed with fine weather, fortunately as we sat outside to eat! We had a good journey on Eurotunnel both ways, having bucks fizz and croissants on the way out, in keeping with tradition set on our very first coach trip to France in 2004!! I do hope everyone enjoyed the trip, suggestions for a future trip would be appreciated.

Future events include Breakfast in Church on 5th July and 1st November, Harvest Supper on 10th October and Carols by Candlelight on 12th December.

We are really sorry that Anne Brenchley, Anni Butler and Margaret Thornton have all decided to stand down from our committee, due to various personal reasons, but we would like to thank them very much indeed for all their hard work and input to our committee over the years.

They have all been valuable members and have given their ideas, time, and love so willingly, thank you all.

Alaine Summers (Secretary)

April 2015 Report

We had a successful Breakfast in Church on 1st March, our thanks to Robin Oakley for frying 30 eggs!

Our coach trip to Saint Valery-sur-Somme in France on Saturday, 9th May, is now full. Letters with final details are going out at the end of March / beginning April and a reminder that the balance due is to be paid by 12th April.

We were planning to hold an outing or social evening in September, but the Carnival & Fete committee is organizing a music event to celebrate our Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch, and we all want to support that. We are therefore planning to hold a social evening in November instead.

Other future events include Breakfast in Church on 5th July and 1st November, Harvest Supper on 10th October and Carols by Candlelight on 12th December.

March 2015 Report

Our annual Parish Sunday Lunch was held on 1st February in McCabe Day Centre and a record number of people attended. It was a very happy occasion and hopefully everyone enjoyed the meal. The beef was superb, supplied by our local butcher, W J Crouch. The committee worked really hard but were rewarded by hearing the continual buzz of conversation and everyone enjoying themselves! Unfortunately our Chairman, Tug, was ill and unable to be with us. We missed you Tug, we had plenty of sherry and wine left over this year!! We would like to thank Alec, Paul and Colin for stepping in as wine waiters, Pat for helping prepare vegetables, and Rob for carving all that wonderful beef, what a way to celebrate your birthday!

Our first 2015 Breakfast in Church will be on 1st March. As usual this will be served between 8.45-9.15am, between the 8.00am and 10.00am services, and everyone is welcome. Because this seems to be so popular we have arranged to hold this 3 times this year. If you haven’t been before do come along to one! We serve bacon, sausage and egg, or just toast if you prefer. To help with catering just ring me if you haven’t put your name on the list and want to come along.

Numbers are rising for our coach trip to St Valery sur Somme in France on Saturday, 9th May, so this will definitely go ahead. We will be leaving Staplehurst about 7.30 am and travelling via Eurotunnel.
We will arrive in St Valery in time for lunch, then – for those who would like to – there is the opportunity for a steam train ride round the Baie de Somme, quoted as being “one of the most beautiful bays in the world, preserved in its wild state”. We will be leaving St Valery about 5.00pm and arrive back in Staplehurst about 8.30pm. Cost per person for the coach is £30, obviously the steam train tickets would be an optional extra. If you have put your name down for this trip you will be receiving a letter early in March giving details and asking for a deposit. Currently there are a few spaces on the coach, so please ring me if you would like to come along.

Future events include Breakfast in Church on 5th July and 1st November, bring and share lunch on 12th July following our curate, Mark’s, first 10.00am communion service, Harvest Supper on 10th October and Carols by Candlelight on 12th December. We are also hoping to arrange another outing or social evening in September.

Our Carols by Candlelight evening on 13th December was a great success. 63 people attended and enjoyed an evening of singing carols, some seasonal entertainment, and a lovely supper. We would like to say a huge thank you to Richard Green for being our MC for the evening, and to Daniel Brady for playing the keyboard and trying to keep us in tune throughout! The committee would also like to thank Rob & Maureen Whittlesea, Robin Oakley and Elaine Martin for their help in the afternoon as well as the evening. I think everyone enjoyed themselves, and an incredible £350 profit was made.

Our popular Sunday Parish Lunch is on 1st February 2015 in the McCabe Day Centre. Hopefully everyone will enjoy that. Our first 2015 Breakfast in Church will be on 1st March. As usual this will be served between the 8.00am and 10.00am services, and everyone is welcome.

We are organising a coach trip to St Valery sur Somme in France on Saturday, 9th May. We will be leaving Staplehurst about 7.30-8.00am and travelling via Eurotunnel.
There is a list at the back of Church so we can see how many people would be interested, or give me a ring if you have any queries.

November 2014 Report

25 of us went to Sittingbourne greyhound racing on 27th September and had a really enjoyable evening, some were much luckier than others of course!

On 28th September Caroline Highwood had a very successful Donations for Dining “Sparkling Afternoon Tea”. Not only did we enjoy a delicious tea with lots of sparkling wine, but she had set up a travel quiz and sold runner beans to raise extra money. Thank you Caroline for your generosity, which raised £186.95 for our Church funds.

Numbers were slightly lower than usual for our Harvest Lunch this year but, thanks to the generosity of those who attended, we will be sending about £260 to our Harvest charity.

We will be serving Breakfast in Church between 8.45-9.15am on Sunday, 2nd November. Sausages, bacon and eggs will be available, or just toast and marmalade if you prefer. Our river trip on 26th July was a huge success, our thanks to Val for organizing this so well, even putting up signs so nobody would get lost between the car park and the boat! 59 people went and I am sure they all thoroughly enjoyed the evening as we have had some excellent feedback. The weather kept fine, which was wonderful, the buffet supper was good and the bar prices were reasonable! We are already looking at plans for a similar event next year.
